Tutorial: WordPress for Internet Marketers

WordPress, THE OpenSource Blogging Software is an excellent tool for internet marketers. By now many of the so called internet-marketing gurus have recognized this and new websites are blooming everywhere which show how to best use WordPress – of course this information will cost you a few bucks … – new eBooks for WordPress are being published, which serve as a teaser and offer little content but are a page by page upsell preparation process for a membership site, a costly backstage pass, etc…
If there is also another way – if you know how – and which ‘pay-for’ ressources are actually worth the buck? Read on…

First of all you have to bring WordPress onto your server, i.e. your own domain with php and MySQL is a prerogative. I won’t go deeper into where and how you can find the best deals; there are many offers out there and it depends more on your likes and dislikes or on you individual targets to find the right fit.
How you go about installing WP you can view in this tutorial for beginners and intermediates alike; credits to Guido W. Stiehle, www.thejunglemarketer.com

Then the whole thingie should be pimped so that it does the internet marketing job well; I will skip the dtails of the ins and outs of these tweaks here; only so much: depending on the business model used there are different ways which aim to get as much traffic as possible to the site.
There are lots of different opinions on what is required; watch out and keep an eye on your money, chances are that you spend more than necessary – a clever marketer can make money from almost everything…
The tools (WordPress plugins), that I am using and that are introduced in this list are all free but for one.
An excellent ressource for your further WordPress research is the Codex and you can find many plugins here.
My listing is in alphabetical order, not sorted by subject – so let’s start:

  • 1. Adsense Deluxe: integrate Google Ads in your site; this one is really slick…
  • 2. AutoLinks: define your own keywords which automatically turn into links in your post…
  • 3. AutoPost: Posts your articles at the date you set; this lets you fill up your blog over the weekend and your articles then show up at the predefined date. This one is not open source.
  • 4. Customizable Post Listings: Creates a list of links to recent articles; see an example on this site top left…
  • 5. EzStatic: Makes it easy to create static pages in WordPress…
  • 6. FileManager: A filemanager with a graphical UI; file- and picture-handling the way we are (almost) all used to…
  • 7. Google Sitemap Generator: Creates and manages your Google sitemap and pings Google after every update…
  • 8. NoPingWait: For uninterrupted editing of content; pings are performed in the background and you can edit away without that regular coffe break…
  • 9. Polyglot: Makes wordpress a multilingual CMS by using simple tags, that you insert in your posts…
  • 10. SmartUpdate Pinger: Pings only when it is supposed to ping…
  • 11. SubscribeMe: Turns your feeds into nice SubscribeMe links…
  • 12. WP-Amazon: Easy and fast inserting Amazon-Links in posts, just like this one:
    Professionelle PHP 5-Programmierung
  • 13. WordPress Database Backup: no explanation necessary :-) I heard that this one has made it into the new WordPress core – congrats skippy…
  • 14: WordPress email notification plugin oder subscribe2: Users can subscribe to email notifications about new posts…
  • 15. xfish meta: Gives you an opportunity to add your own keywords and metatags to your posts….

And for all of those expecting lots of traffic, there ist WP-Cache 2. It caches your pages and delivers content much faster that the php-script could ever do.

Find one variation over this theme as an example at beginnermillionaire.com; they list a whole number of plugins, with some costly ones among them…

Besides the link above, you can find video tutorials covering WordPress at Brandon Hong’s site: www.wordpressvideos.com and at Sherman Hu’s:
It is well worth watching his 22 teaser videos which are free and then making up your own mind…
